The Last Leaf ||Moments|| Class 9 English Chapter 7
Summary Of The Last Leaf
The story is set in a Greenwich Village apartment, where two young artists, Johnsy and Sue, live together. Johnsy falls seriously ill with pneumonia and becomes despondent, believing that she will die when the last leaf falls from a vine outside her window. As she watches the leaves fall, her will to live diminishes.
Sue, deeply worried about her friend's state of mind, tries to encourage Johnsy, but her efforts seem futile. One night, a kind-hearted elderly painter named Behrman, who lives in the same building and has always dreamed of painting a masterpiece, learns about Johnsy's belief regarding the leaves.
In a selfless act, Behrman goes out into the stormy night and paints a realistic leaf on the wall when he sees that the last leaf is about to fall. The next morning, Johnsy is surprised to see that the last leaf has not fallen, and she gains hope and strength to recover.
However, it is revealed that Behrman caught pneumonia after his brave act and died shortly after. Ultimately, his sacrifice not only saves Johnsy's life but also embodies the theme of selfless love and artistic dedication
